What did the gifts brought by the Three Wise Men symbolise?
In Spain, the night of 5–6 January is undoubtedly the most magical of the year. Children go to bed full of excitement, eager for morning to arrive so they can discover the gifts left by the Three Wise Men.
According to tradition, each brought a carefully chosen gift with a different meaning:
- Gold. This metal was brought by Melchior. Legend says it was chosen as a symbol of greatness and royalty. A piece of gold jewellery can therefore be a thoughtful gift for someone you truly cherish.
- Myrrh. This reddish resin was used for medicinal purposes and is still found in perfumes and colognes today. Balthazar was the king who brought this gift.
- Frankincense. One of its most common uses was in worship as a sign of respect for the divine. It was brought by Caspar, and its fragrance is still found in many homes at Christmas.
