Why are we fascinated by sunflowers?

Some flowers simply appeal to us. And then there are sunflowers: flowers that mesmerise us. It’s no coincidence that they’ve starred in paintings, songs, tattoos and summer bouquets. There’s something magnetic, almost mystical about them. Something beyond their size, colour or name.

At BonBee, we work with them every July because we know they have a special power. Today, we’re sharing why.

They don’t follow the sun — they bring it to us

There’s a widespread belief (and a slightly misleading one) that mature sunflowers constantly turn to follow the sun. In fact, they only do this when they’re young. Later, they stay facing east, as if waiting for an endless sunrise. Isn’t that beautiful?

Yet the symbolism remains: sunflowers represent the search for light, constancy and gratitude. In Japanese culture, for example, they’re given to wish someone happiness. In other traditions, they’re associated with renewal and inner strength. And on any Mediterranean terrace… they’re simply pure joy.

Sunflowers and Van Gogh: an obsession with light

Van Gogh painted more than a dozen pictures featuring sunflowers. He made some to decorate his friend Gauguin’s room, and others during a period of solitude and creative exhilaration. Van Gogh’s sunflowers aren’t just beautiful: they’re cries of colour. In fact, many art historians say it was through them that he truly set his most personal style free.

Why do we mention this? Because every sunflower bouquet that leaves BonBee carries a little of that same spirit: a burst of light, imperfect beauty and vivid life.

Two bouquets that celebrate summer without holding back

Among the favourites at our online flower shop in Barcelona are two very different bouquets with the same sunny spirit:

  • Suns N’ Roses: a bouquet that combines sunflowers with pink roses. As if the sun had fallen in love with a cloud of candyfloss. A little sweet, a little playful and full of surprises.
  • Migdia: midday in bloom. Seven sunflowers that don’t shy away. To fill a dining room with light or give a gift that makes a statement.

You don’t need an excuse to give one. But if you’d like one… here it is: July is peak sunflower season, which means they’re at their very best.

Sunflower delivery in Barcelona: a bright idea?

Absolutely. Because Barcelona is a city full of sunshine. And because some messages don’t fit into a WhatsApp, but they do fit into a sunflower bouquet:

“Thinking of you”, “I admire you”, “Hang in there, the sun is coming out”, “I don’t know what to get you, but I know this will make you smile”.

With our flower delivery service in Barcelona, you can have sunflowers delivered in 90 minutes or schedule a surprise for later. You choose the moment; we take care of the wow factor.

A reminder for when the summer heat starts to drag

Sunflowers are summer in a vase. And although they don’t turn to follow the sun as the stories say, they do something just as lovely: they turn heads. 🌻

And on long, hot days filled with routine, that’s already quite something.
