Christmas without poinsettias? That is like a tree without lights or a festive cake without cream: it makes no sense. These red-leaved plants, also known as Christmas flowers, are the true divas of the festive season. But have you ever wondered how something so seemingly simple became such a powerful symbol of Christmas? At BonBee, as well as decorating your home and surprising people with gifts delivered in Barcelona, we love making you smile with curious stories. Join us to discover why Christmas would not be Christmas without poinsettias, and how to make them part of your celebrations.
A plant with an unexpected story
Imagine an exotic plant native to Mexico going from decorating Aztec ceremonies to becoming the star of Christmas decorations worldwide. Sounds like a film, does it not? That is exactly what happened to the poinsettia.
It all began with the Aztecs, who already treasured this plant and called it Cuetlaxochitl. They used it to dye fabrics and in religious rituals. It was not until the 19th century, however, that Joel Roberts Poinsett, an American ambassador living in Mexico, fell in love with the plant and took it to the United States. Named in his honour, the poinsettia began to grow in popularity… and never stopped growing, quite literally.
How the poinsettia became a Christmas favourite
If you are wondering why this plant is associated with Christmas, here is the answer. A beautiful Mexican legend tells of a poor girl who wanted to bring a gift to baby Jesus but could not afford one. Moved by the occasion, she gathered simple green branches and placed them on the church altar. In a Christmas miracle, they turned into brilliant red flowers, and a tradition was born.
Since then, the poinsettia has become a symbol of generosity and good wishes. Today, every home, office and Instagram account seems to feature one in December. And honestly, who can resist that vibrant red?
How to decorate with poinsettias and natural materials
This is where the fun begins. At BonBee, we know Christmas is the perfect time to unleash your creativity and show off your decorations in your stories. Here are a few ideas for using poinsettias and other natural materials this season:
- Poinsettia table centrepieces: Combine a red poinsettia with Nordmann fir branches, a little moss and white candles. It is the perfect combination for giving your Christmas dinners an elegant, welcoming feel.
- DIY Christmas wreaths: Use natural twine, a little mistletoe and some sprigs of holly (Ilex) to make your own door wreath. For an extra eye-catching touch, add small poinsettias around it.
- Magical corners: A poinsettia in a beautiful pot (like our Xmas Queen) can instantly turn any corner of your home into a festive space.
And if you prefer to keep things simple, our poinsettias alone are enough to add that festive touch we all love.
