How to keep cut flowers fresh
First, there are some simple rules that apply to all (or almost all!) species:
- Put them in water. Choose a vase that fits the bouquet and put them in water.
- Add food to the flowers. Add flower food to the water to replace the nutrition they would have gotten from the soil and change the water and food every few days.
- Prepare them. Cut at least 2 cm from the end of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This maximizes the surface area, allowing more water intake and preventing them from touching the bottom of the vase. Also remove any leaves that remain under the water so they will not grow bacteria or rot.
- Leave them in a suitable place. Placing flowers in the kitchen next to ripe fruit can shorten their life, as the fruit emits ethylene gas. Placing them next to the television causes the petals to burn; or cold drafts or heat sources can cause dehydration.
